The girl is being praised as “brave” and “courageous” for telling thousands of her followers on social media the story of how she was raped.
The teenager waived her right to anonymity, and publicly says that she was raped by Neil McNally, a 33-year-old man. Emily-Rose says: “I am not ashamed to have been raped.”
Mr. McNally, who is mentally challenged, pled guilty to rape, assault by penetration, robbery and fraud, and was sentenced to 15 years in jail.
Now the teen rape victim wants to publicize her story on social media to empower other women. She says: “I will shout it from the rooftops to say what he did to me.”
Emily-Rose Hinnells, 19 years old, has a one-year-old daughter. The young single mum went to meet friends to go out drinking for a birthday celebration in Leeds, one dark night in January.
The petite girl was walking alone on the streets around 9:30pm at night, carrying her handbag and a bottle of Jagermeister, and was trying to find the apartment that her friend had booked for the night.
Then, she says, Neil McNally came up and asked her if she had any spare change.
The girl admits: “I assumed he was a harmless homeless guy and ended up asking him for directions, as I thought he might be familiar with the streets.”
Emily-Rose followed Mr. McNally, who suffers from a personality disorder, down some stairs to a secluded dead end at the side of the River Aire. The 19-year-old says that by the time she realized that Mr. McNally desired to have sex with her, it was too late.
Mr. McNally put his hand over the girl’s mouth, and pulled away Emily-Rose’s clothing to expose the girl’s genitals, it was said at trial. The 33-year-old man then put on a condom, and penetrated the teenager.
Emily-Rose did not put up a fight, but told police this was because she was scared for her life. She says: “I thought I was going to die. As he was raping me my head was next to the canal, I had thoughts of him throwing me into the canal.”
Terrified Emily-Rose Hinnells did not resist as the older man had sex with her and eventually ejaculated inside her. After Mr. McNally completed sexual intercourse with the frightened girl, he withdrew from her and apologized.
Emily-Rose begged Mr. McNally not to hurt her. At this point, the girl was stripped half nude and was cowering on the ground.
Mr. McNally reassured the teen that she could go home, and allowed her to put her clothes back on.
Mr. McNally left with his victim’s iPhone, the bottle of Jagermeister, and a bank card, which he later used to withdraw ten pounds. He was identified as the suspect through DNA evidence that he left inside his victim, and was arrested that same evening.
When sentencing the man to 15 years in jail, Judge Penelope Belcher said: “This girl cannot lead a normal existence because of what you have done to her.”
Now that Mr. McNally is behind bars, Emily-Rose Hinnells is publicizing the encounter to her followers on Facebook.
“You always get told not to talk to strangers, but the older you get the less important it seems to become,” the 19-year-old says. “I never thought something like this would happen to me.”
